WHO WE ARE

Starting in January of 2024, Raleigh Food and Beverage United workers realized that there was a major issue in the food and beverage industry—the culture and rules surrounding the industry itself. The vision started with workers in Downtown Raleigh, and when there is an issue, you need a solution to solve it. The workers at Young Hearts Distilling were experiencing exploitation in their workplace with workers facing problems in worker health and safety, and were receiving unfair treatment and unusually low pay from the owner. As a result, the employees of Young Hearts Distilling got together and drafted a list of over ten demands to be made that would change their workplace for the better. After being refused these demands, the workers went on strike and fought for a better business that would put the employees first. With support from other workers downtown, the workers at Young Hearts Distilling continued to picket through the rain, and were able to successfully negotiate safer work practices, transparency in employee tips to prevent more wage theft, transparent employee reviews, and frequent employee-management meetings. In tandem with these events, Raleigh Food and Beverage Workers United was created, and now exists as Raleigh Food and Beverage United today.

OUR MISSION

As workers, we deserve to make a living wage with open and honest policies and documentation about tips and hourly wages. We deserve healthcare and safe working conditions. The low pay, heat and harassment are part of the largest threats to service workers on the job. From sweltering hot kitchens and sunny summer patios to unwarranted touches and remarks, mismanagement, neglect, and favoritism. It's up to us as a community of workers to set the industry right!

WHAT WE KNOW

We have legal rights as workers to come together when we are disrespected or wronged on the job. Employees should have a lasting voice in how their workplace is run. We believe a city-wide network of restaurant workers is important to building power among our section of the working class. The city’s million dollar restaurant and hotel industry is built on our labor! The millions we contribute to the city’s bank account must be better managed for the welfare of working people (that’s us!)

We want to bring light to and work towards solving citywide issues that are deeply felt in the industry: the wage theft, the expensive parking, the rent increases, the juggling multiple industry jobs, the harassment, and more.
